Armstrong has clinical experience in providing direct services to high risk/special needs populations, including those diagnosed with co-occurring psychiatric and substance use disorders, in acute inpatient hospitalization, intensive outpatient, and outpatient SUD treatment programs. Her program of research consists of studying the relationships among stress, distress tolerance, and social support as they relate to mental health and substance use outcomes. She is also interested more broadly in identifying health disparities, healthcare needs, and barriers to seeking and accessing care among individuals with co-occurring conditions. Finally, while on fellowship at VACHS, Dr. Armstrong hopes to explore transdiagnostic mechanisms that may be targeted to improve treatment outcomes for veterans with multimorbid conditions.

Curtis Bone, M.D. I am thrilled to be a part of this amazing group. To give you my brief story, medical training led me from the South, out to the East Coast for medical school, then to the West Coast for a family medicine residency and most recently to Connecticut for an addiction medicine fellowship. My research home is the Yale West Haven Veteran's Hospital. My research interests are varied some of my work centers on the intersection between health services for substance use disorders and women's health care services.

Brian Earl, MDiv., BCC Brian Earl, MDiv., BCC is a first year fellow in the VAIAFAT at West Haven, CT. He earned his Masters of Divinity (MDiv) at Concordia Seminary in St. Before going to serve his first parish call Brian was a Chaplain Intern at Barnes Jewish St. Peter’s Hospital in St.

He then served as the sole-pastor of Centennial Lutheran Church in Superior, NE for the next five years. During that time the love of hospital chaplaincy did not leave him. So, then, after leaving the parish he pursued hospital chaplaincy as a career.

He completed a 2 year Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) Chaplain Residency at the VA St. Louis Health Care System. There he gained clinical experience in various wards of the hospital, for example medical, hospice, mental health, and addiction. Recently, Brian was Board Certified by the National Association of VA Chaplains (NAVAC). In his fellowship Brian has two major research interests: One, to equip and empower Chaplains to provide spiritual care to those dealing with addiction; and, two, to better integrate spirituality and chaplaincy into the overall addiction treatment interdisciplinary team. Additionally, since Brian is the first Chaplain Fellow as a part of any VAIAFAT he has the distinct joy, honor and adventure of developing a space and role for chaplains in West Haven now and for future fellows. Hopefully other sites will recruit chaplain fellows and the VA can be a leader in integrating spirituality, chaplaincy, and addiction treatment.
